3 out of 5 stars OK message, bad camera works   October 10, 2008

The video documented a sermon/lecture. The message itself is good, delivered clearly, peppered with some humor ... standard evangelistic message. My gripe is after a while it can be quite a challenge to look at the screen that is filled mostly with black & white objects (Rob wears black). While Rob walks to the left and right of the stage, the cameras don't follow him as fast. Thus there are several moments that he is out of the screen. I don't know if this dvd is supposed to be watched on a wide screen lcd, mine is still the old crt tv. So, at moments it's annoying to see only part of Rob's body.
Instead of a dvd, this is better released as a cd.

5 out of 5 stars The Gods are Not Angry DVD by Rob Bell   September 7, 2008

Rob Bell goes beyond relevant in this amazing project. I am sharing this with everyone I can get to watch it. The historical context of his message creates an understanding of some Biblical texts, and resonates Christ's story into my life today.

Some of us struggle with issues of shame, discontent, etc., and in this work, Rob Bell takes us on a spiritual journey to meet Christ. Awesome.

A great follow up to 'Everything is Spiritual.' Can't wait for his next tour video.

5 out of 5 stars Great Teaching   July 11, 2008

I would have to say, that i had been anticipating this release for some time now. Rob is a favorite of mine (which isnt uncommon today) and i thought a topic like this would suit him well. The thing i most enjoyed about it was his constant comparision to old testament sacrifices and the Grace of God. This video played much more like a sermon that his 1st release "Everything is Spiritual", which was more like a lecture. This release also explained what the Gospel is in a way that i have never thought of before. I am honestly thinking (as a pastor) that if you have someone with doubts in the existence or even love of God, allowing them to borrow The Gods Arent Angry and Everything is Spiritual may dismiss their doubts and get them on the path they need to be before they even set foot into a church service. Thank God for teachers like Rob Bell who speak in a way that even the biggest biblical novice could comprehend 10,000 years of history.

100% Recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Really good, but it's no "Everything is Spiritual"   May 2, 2008

Okay,
So I haven't seen the DVD (because it's not available as of this review) but I saw the show live in Grand Rapids, which was the final show and there was a film crew there.

Let me start out by saying it was really good. I enjoyed it and it was decently biblical. I also like how he occasionally uses Rabbinical tradition. He does this not to say that some of the Rabbis stories about biblical characters were historically accurate, but to highlight how certain Rabbis thought about real biblical characters (like Abraham) to explain certain commandments like the prohibition against worshipping other gods and making idols. See the website for Christian Book Distributors for video clips containing one of these moments.

That being said, it wasn't as good as "Everything is Spiritual," which I loved. EIS had a lot more new information, like all the physics stuff. A lot of what he says in "The gods aren't Angry"...well...I felt like I already knew it.

Don't get me wrong, I still liked it a lot. I also plan on getting the DVD when it's available. Do I recommend it? Yes. Is it Rob's best work? No, but it's still good. Having been to Mars Hill a number of times it felt like another one of his sermons instead of a special event teaching.
